Honoring The Doughboys – December 2019

This magnificent statue of a doughboy stands in Elizabeth Park in Pueblo, Colorado. It honors the U.S. armed services during World War I. My Grandfather, George A. Carlson, took me to the park in 1976.

My wife and I pass through Pueblo often and most times we stop at the park and I place a small American Flag at the base of the statue. Then every Holiday Season, I lay an evergreen wreath also with a flag.

Through the years I’ve never seen the city groundskeepers, however I’ve noticed they will pull up the flag, mow the grass then replace the flag. So, there is a unique partnership to keep a flag flying to Honor the Doughboys.

But, have a closer look on the doughboy’s left hand. The groundskeepers have placed the flag so it is completely out of harm’s way. They have upped their game!
