Honoring America’s Heroes – June 20, 2013

I had driven south from Prague about twenty miles to photograph Archduke Ferdinand’s Konopiste castle.  As I approached the castle’s parking area, I noticed an American flag engraved in a grey granite monument on my right.  Here is what I found.  I was so glad that I still had a few small American flags.

The end of the war was less than three weeks away on May 8.  How tragic.  It was all so tragic.

My guess is someone brought flowers to the monument this past Memorial Day – a comforting thought.

About Jeff Lowdermilk

I have traveled to Europe several times over the last few years to follow my grandfather's path as detailed in his World War I diary. My grandfather was an American Infantryman who survived the war. This has been an adventurous journey of self-exploration. The friends I have made along the way and experiences gained have greatly enriched my life

Jeff – Absolutely amazing pictures. Your photography captures the historical perspective, but your words carry much more. Thank you for doing this.

I Too came across this site during my stay in Prague by accident and I too reflected on a tragedy and deplorable action by the Nazi during the end of WW2. For ever remembered.
