An American Pilgrimage: The tomb of the Marquis de Lafayette

The United States declared war on Germany in April 1917 and by early summer the initial troops began arriving in France. On, July 4, 1917, as the US 1st Division marched under the Arch de Triumph and down the Champs Elysees one officer, Lt. Col. Stanton, did something very different. He found his way to Lafayette’s tomb. He stood at the base of the tomb and while saluting declared, “Lafayette we are here!”
